  DIGNITY CONSERVING THERAPY WORKSHOP
Monday 2 – Tuesday 3 November 2009
Swiss Grand Bondi Beach

Professor Harvey Chochinov will be conducting a Dignity Conserving Therapy Workshop on Monday 2 – Tuesday 3 November 2009 in Sydney. This is the first time that dignity conserving therapy has been taught to health professionals in Australia outside of a research setting. The two-day workshop will be held at the Swiss Grande at Bondi Beach, Sydney in conjunction with the Inaugural Whole Person Care National Symposium (Friday 30-Saturday 31 October 2009).

Dignity Conserving Therapy is based on an empirically derived model, coming out of detailed qualitative and quantitative work addressing the issue of dignity in the terminally ill. It has been designed to enhance a sense of purpose, meaning, and overall quality of life for those patients with life limiting illness. The technique will be taught in two days of intensive inter-active training to experienced health care professionals who have strong communication and counselling skills. Dignity Conserving Therapy is brief, can be practically applied and has potential secondary benefits to the patient’s family.

Prof Harvey Max Chochinov is Professor of Psychiatry and Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba, and Director of the Manitoba Palliative Care Research Unit at CancerCare Manitoba. He holds the only Canada Research Chair in Palliative Care.

WORKSHOP APPLICATION PROCESS
Places in Professor Harvey Chochinov's Dignity Conserving Therapy Workshop are limited and as a result places will be allocated through an application process.

The technique will be taught in two days of intensive inter-active training to experienced health care professionals who have strong communication and counselling skills.

During the registration process you will be asked to address the following criteria;
  1. Experience in counselling (e.g. list current qualifications)
  2. Indication of your current place of employment (palliative care or oncology fields will be given preference)
  3. Indication of how you believe the new skills learnt in this workshop will translate into patient care.
Applicants will then be contacted within 2 weeks of their application with the result. Successful applicants will then be issued with an invoice for payment which must be paid by 30 September in order for their place in the workshop to be confirmed.

Due to overwhelming interest we will consider every application for the Dignity Therapy workshop and a decision will be made on the merit of each application taking into account our limitations in numbers. Applicants will be notified within two weeks of the receipt of their application.

Please see the Registration Page to apply for this workshop.
