Medical Bionics – Engineering Solutions for Neural Disorders

The Bionics Institute is delighted to host our third International Conference, "Medical Bionics – Engineering Solutions for Neural Disorders".

The conference will bring together eminent and early career researchers, clinicians and industry representatives working in the diverse field of medical bionics. They will travel from all regions of the world and bring expertise from disciplines as diverse as biotechnology, engineering, ICT, polymer science, nanotechnology and medicine.

Invitation from the Conference Chair

Over the past six years, the Bionics Institute has hosted two international conferences that have proven popular for not only their excellent scientific content. Responding to overwhelmingly positive feedback about the 2011 conference, the Institute has decided to host this event every two years, thereby keeping the bond between delegates strong and scientific discussion vibrant.

The conference has proven popular for not only its excellent scientific content, but also its boutique size and relaxed feeling. Quality venues and the external activities have created lasting memories for delegates.

This conference is the Institute's first scientific meeting since the international announcement of Australia's first bionic eye device, which was designed, produced and tested at the Bionics Institute. While showcasing the collaborative effort of the prototype bionic eye, the meeting will also cover the broad range of medical bionic devices.

The 2013 conference will bring to Australia recognised international experts in the field of medical bionics, provide an insight to the significant Australian achievements in this field, provide opportunities for delegates to visit local facilities, and to foster new alliances between Australian researchers with their overseas colleagues.

The conference will explore the following themes:
  • Medical Bionics Design, Development & Safety
  • Enabling technologies for medical Bionics: ICT; Smart materials & Smart Biology
  • Electrode-neural interface: Improving the efficacy
  • Drug delivery technology
  • Cochlear implants
  • Bionic Vision
  • Functional Electrical stimulation
  • Neurobionics: recording and stimulation in the central nervous system
  • Blue sky projects
One of the most distinct aspects of this meeting will be the great breadth of presentations; describing new and emerging disciplines that will help shape the development of medical bionics over the next two decades. Further, the meeting will provide inspiration and focus for the next generation of researchers in this field. This will be achieved through a strong emphasis on poster presentations, providing a valuable opportunity for new investigators to showcase their work and meet others working in their area of research.

The Conference will be held at Silverwater Resort at Phillip Island, Victoria, only 80 minutes from Melbourne. This modern resort is fully equipped for conferences, with luxury accommodation and facilities. The views of the Bass coast are stunning. Phillip Island is world famous for its delightful fairy penguin parade, major events, native Australian wildlife, beautiful coastline, surfing, local wine and gourmet produce.

I warmly extend an invitation to you to join us for this exciting event.

Kind regards

Rob Shepherd
Director of the Bionics Institute and Conference Chair
