FIELD TRIPS
There will be three field trips to choose from:-
Inspection of Affected Sites from August 1998 Storm Event
This tour will include visiting sites which were adversely impacted during the storm event in 1998 in the Mt Ousley/Balgownie and Bulli areas which are located to the north of the Wollongong CBD. You will see examples of areas where council is purchasing properties from high hazard areas, culvert blockage, inadequate trunk drainage systems and a recently constructed detention basin.
Inspection of West Dapto Future Urban Release Area and Areas Affected from 1984 Storm Event
This tour will focus on the West Dapto area which is located to the south of the Wollongong CBD. Delegates will see examples of areas subjected to the worst flooding during the 1984 storm event as well as future areas for development of West Dapto with a description of the flood strategy on which it is based.
Inspection of SES Headquarters and Lake Illawarra Entrance Improvement Works
This tour will include visiting the State Emergency Services Headquarters in Wollongong where delegates will be shown through the headquarters and will be made aware of the operational activities and the equipment and information the SES uses to assist it in addressing the flood risk
The second part of this tour is a visit to the recently completed lake entrance works at Lake Illawarra. These works have included the construction of a northern rock training wall, the extension of the southern training wall as well a considerable amount of dredging at the lakes entrance.

Marshall Frech
Marshall Frech is director of the Flood Safety Project and the producer of the Emmy-nominated documentaries: "Flash Flood Alley" and "The Water's Edge" -- airing on U.S. public television. Mr. Frech is currently living in Boulder, Colorado and working on a series of flood education projects, movies, and critical reviews of floodplain policies. |

Al Goodman
Al Goodman joined the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) on October 20, 1997 and has served as the NFIP State Coordinator since November 1997. Since that date, he has worked 13 Presidential Disaster Declarations in Mississippi (including Hurricane Katrina) and 1 in North Carolina (Hurricane Floyd), 9 SBA Declared Disasters, and 22 Mississippi Governor State of Emergencies. On February 1, 2006, he was promoted to a newly created Director position of the Floodplain Management Bureau within MEMA. He has assisted with the reworking of the E273: ‘Managing Floodplain Development through the NFIP’ course on numerous occasions, as well as acting as an instructor at the National Emergency Training Center / Emergency Management Institute. |

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS
The Workshops are being held in conjunction with the 48 th Annual FMA Conference hosted by Wollongong City Council. The sessions run from 9am to 5pm on Tuesday 26 February 2008 to link into the Conference Speakers / Program which commences with welcome drinks on the Tuesday evening. Lunch will be included in the workshop program.
Workshop 1: Practical Consideration of Climate Change
This session includes presentations on climate change and its impacts in the morning and a workshop on the practical management of climate change in the afternoon.
The morning session will involve presentations from CSIRO and DECC and consultants aimed to provide an understanding of the current status of flood risk related climate research, outline how sea levels impact upon flooding and discuss the potential impacts of climate change on flood behaviour and the associated ramification and their management.
The afternoon will workshop a number of case studies into the potential ramifications of climate change on flood risk and open up discussion on how these impacts could be managed for existing and future development for the particular locations.
Workshop 2: Effective Consideration of Flood Risk Management in Land Use Planning
This session involves presentations on how flood risk management can be included in the land use planning process.
The morning session will involve presentations from State and Local Government representatives and consultants aimed to provide an understanding of the issues that exist in effectively including flood risk management in land use planning.
The afternoon will workshop a number of case studies of how land use planning can effectively consider the full range of flood risk and will provide time for interactive discussion on what should be included and how this can be effectively achieved given current constraints. |
