  CONFERENCE PROGRAM
Excited by all the possibilities that a conference like this offers, and with a focus firmly on story and books, the conference committee chose All the Wild Wonders as the theme for the 9th National CBCA conference.

All the Wild Wonders is the title of a poem written by author/illustrator Elizabeth Honey that has also been recorded as a song by Melbourne-based a capella group Coco’s Lunch. It encapsulated the ideas and feelings about story and books that we hoped to bring out in the conference program. We are delighted that Coco’s Lunch will open the conference with a live performance of this song.

With this overarching theme in mind, and with wild and wonderful books as inspiration, our focus became ‘How we can keep books and reading central to the lives of young people in the 21st Century’.

The first day’s program on Friday explores this focus broadly; Saturday’s program explores it from the perspective of illustration; and Sunday’s program explores it from the perspective of text and writing.

The keynote speakers have been invited to address this theme on each day and concurrent sessions that follow have been planned to expand and extend on them with opportunities for expressions of opinion and input from delegates.

In choosing the speakers and presenters for the conference program we aimed to achieve a balance across genders, genres, states and publishers. Another aim was to engage the Melbourne public in the conference and to this end we have introduced the option for two of the keynote sessions (Neil Gaiman’s and Shaun Tan’s) to be open to the general public. We have also planned a program of Satellite events in and around Melbourne over the month of May.

The Expo will be central to the conference with lunches and morning teas being served in this area.

We warmly invite you to come and participate in All the Wild Wonders...

SATELLITE EVENTS
Melbourne is a city for The Arts...
This satellite program has been developed to offer a taste of Melbourne cultural opportunities for delegates to the conference, as well as to advertise and engage the wider Melbourne community in the theme and spirit of this conference All the Wild Wonders.
The many venues approached have responded enthusiastically, offering special opening times, programs and events. We thank them all for their generous support of the conference and hope that you make time to sample some of these ‘wild wonders’ that are on offer!
