Special Interest Group Workshops and Training Courses
A series of Special Interest Group workshops will be run both preceding and following the Conference. Each workshop will include short informal presentations and facilitated discussions groups. The purpose of these workshops is to provide a forum for discussing and debating the latest developments in a specific area of interest with your peers. They will be informal, informative and interactive. Conference Keynote and Invited Speakers will make contributions to relevant workshops. Workshop fees are not included in the full Conference Registration; see the registration form for the applicable additional fees.
All Registrations for these events must be done through the Official Conference Registration Process. Click here to visit the Registration Page |

WORKSHOP 1
Joint Odour and Modelling Workshop
Proudly Sponsored by Pacific Environment Limited
Date: Sunday, 6th September 2009
Time: 9.00 am - 5.00 pm
Venue: Atrium, 168 St Georges Terrace (Level 4).
- The Odour and Modelling workshops will hold a joint session to discuss odour modelling, before splitting into separate odour and modelling groups after the afternoon break.
- Three international researchers have been invited to make presentations and participate in the discussions; Mr. Ton van Harreveld, the CEO of the Odournet group of companies in Europe, Dr Akula Venkatram, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California and Jeff Connors from AECOM Environment, USA. Ton van Harreveld's presentation will be on European perspective on developments in odour including new technology and the development of the CEN standard on odour field surveys with Jeff Connors to present work from the American Petroleum Institute funded evaluation study of AERMOD and CALPUFF. Dr. Venkatram will make a presentation on modeling Low Wind Speed (LWS) and the development of AERMOD.
- The odour and modelling group will discuss the determination of area source emission rates, including a discussion session on the new draft standard DR 08096 Stationary source emissions - Part 4: Area source sampling - Direct measurement techniques.
- Separate sessions in the afternoon may be held with the odour workshop discussing generic buffer distances and odour surveys, whilst the modeling group will discuss other topics and issues nominated by the group.
Numbers are strictly limited to 80. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be included.

WORKSHOP 2
Risk Workshop
Date: Sunday, 6th September 2009
Time: 9.00 am – 5.00 pm
Venue: Durack centre (SKM) building, 263 Adelaide terrace (corner of Victoria Avenue).
The morning session of the Risk Special Interest Group workshop will be looking at what we currently know about the health effects of air pollution and how the results of the international studies relate to what air quality we experience in Australia and New Zealand and the health effects observed. There will be a series of presentations followed by a general discussion.
The afternoon session will run as a workshop and will explore issues around determining population exposure for air pollution. This is a fundamental issue in determining population risk from exposure to air pollution and is a key consideration in the current review of the Ambient Air Quality National Environment Protection Measure in Australia.
Numbers are strictly limited to 30. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be included. |

WORKSHOP 3
Greenhouse Workshop
Proudly Sponsored by SKM
Date: Sunday, 6th September 2009
Time: 10.00 am – 4.00 pm
Venue: Durack centre (SKM) building, 263 Adelaide terrace (corner of Victoria Avenue).
Cities are the focal points and drivers of societal development in all countries. At the same time, they are the largest consumers of natural resources and the biggest sources of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions on the planet.
Sustainable cities are dedicated to creating the smallest possible ecological footprint for its residents. This results in a city that produces the least possible pollution, attains highly efficient land use and makes the lowest possible contribution to global warming. Nonetheless, this presents challenges and opportunities for government, business and society alike.
Presenting a range of speakers to talk about emissions trading, transport, planning, building design and health, the Greenhouse Special Interest Group will facilitate panel discussions to explore the impacts of climate change on quality of life, productivity and the economy.
Numbers are strictly limited to 50. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be included.

WORKSHOP 4
Indoor Air Quality Workshop
Date: Wednesday, 9th September 2009
Time: 1.00 pm – 4.30 pm
Venue: Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (Conference Venue).
This half day workshop's primary goal will be to discuss the standards and guidelines for Indoor Air Quality in order to develop a CASANZ internal Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) guideline. An overview summary of the one day IAQ training course will be covered at the beginning of the workshop. The remainder of the workshop will focus on a panel discussion lead by the experienced field experts which will cover two main sections. The first section will deal with reviewing the current standards and guidelines for indoor air quality (gases, particulates and microbials) for Australia and New Zealand. The second section will focus on reviewing the current techniques for sampling methods and protocol as well as looking at the most suitable and current equipment used in the industry. These two sections will then be summarised and posted on the CASANZ website.
Experienced IAQ professionals that will be present for the workshop include Dr. Heike Neumeister-Kemp, Dr. Steve Wilkinson, Prof. Sue Reed, Dr. Peter Franklin, Dr. Robin Phipps, Dr. Cedric Cheong, Dr. Peter Kemp, Jeff Mann, David Lark and Prof. Lidia Moraswka.
Numbers are strictly limited to 80. Afternoon tea will be included.
TRAINING COURSE 1
Indoor Air Quality Training Course: Standards and Guidelines - What to Measure, How and Why?
Sunday, 6th September 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Presenters: Dr. Heike Neumeister-Kemp, Prof. Sue Reed, Nigel West, Dr. Peter Franklin, David Lark, Marcus Donnelly, Nadja Kampfhenkel, Jeremy Stamkos & Dr. Cedric Cheong.
Venue: Mycologia Australia, Unit 1, 454 Scarborough Beach Road, Osborne Park.
This one day training course provides an overview on current Australian, New Zealand and international standards and guidelines for indoor air quality. This course has a practical hands-on approach and will teach Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) essentials to consultants working or wanting to work in this field. The course will show how to measure and interpret a range of standard IAQ pollutants. This will include detailed explanations from experienced IAQ experts on individual pollutants such as CO2, VOCs and other gases, particles, and microbials. The health effects and behaviour of these pollutants in indoor environments will be discussed in detail. The practical hands-on training will emphasize the use of the latest IAQ monitors and meters currently being used in the industry, plus training on how to interpret the resulting data. The participants will acquire the skills and confidence required to conduct IAQ assessments in all but emergency or extreme situations.
Numbers are strictly limited to 40. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be included.

TRAINING COURSE 2
AERMOD Training Course - CANCELLED
TRAINING COURSE 3
TAPM (V4) Training Course
Wednesday, 9th September 2009 1.00 pm - 5.00 pm and
Thursday, 10th September 9.00 am – 12.30 pm
Presenter: Dr Graeme Ross
Venue: Applied Education, Level 1, 524 Hay Street, Perth
TAPM V4 is the latest version of TAPM and incorporates significant enhancements in the meteorology including low wind parameterisation and other improvements over earlier versions of TAPM.
The one day CASANZ training course of will provide training with a focus on model configuration and inputs; model outputs and interpretation; and hands-on use involving case-studies. All participants will have practice using the model either individually or if preferred in pairs. The course is aimed at air quality modellers who:
- have a need to use TAPM for pollutant modelling; or
- require meteorological data generation for modelling system such as CALPUFF or with limited local meteorological data.
Numbers are strictly limited to 12. Lunch and afternoon tea on the first day, and morning tea on the second day will be provided. |
